Emerging and Disruptive Technologies

Shaping the Future

The Emerging and Disruptive Technologies (EDT) program shapes and future-proofs the defence innovation ecosystem, monitoring, investigating, and researching leap-ahead tech and asymmetric capabilities.

EDT invests in deep, long-term partnerships with universities, industry, and research providers, shaping and nurturing critical research and development capabilities aligned with Defence's future needs.

Funding research in areas aligned with Defence Strategic Review priorities, EDT aims to provide the Australian Defence Force with an asymmetric advantage through projects typically lasting 3 to 5 years.

Advanced Strategic Capabilities Accelerator will promote opportunities under the EDT program through key stakeholders including:

  • Office of Defence Industry Support
  • Australian Defence Science
  • university Network
  • industry associations
  • government agencies.

The EDT program is not required to deliver short-term acquisition outcomes – it will deliver discovery, new knowledge, concepts and prototypes to help protect against surprise and build capability to provide an international technology edge for Australia.

The EDT program runs on an annual cycle with priorities announced via Opportunity Statements endorsed from the Chief Defence Scientist.
